Bikepacking in Italy

Italy's extraordinary variety makes it one of Europe's most rewarding bikepacking countries. The Apennines run the full length of the peninsula, offering a spine of challenging mountain riding with countless routes through medieval hilltowns and quiet agricultural valleys. The Strade Bianche — the white gravel roads of Tuscany — are iconic in cycling and equally magnificent under a loaded bike. The Dolomites in the north deliver dramatic scenery and genuine Alpine climbing, while the deep south from Calabria to Sicily adds heat, culture, and coastal riding to the mix. Italy's café culture turns every rest stop into an occasion: a proper espresso and a cornetto are rarely more than 20 km apart, even in rural areas. Best seasons are May–June and September–October; August is crowded and hot in the south.

Popular routes in Italy
-

-
Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese
A 500 km flat gravel route following the historic Apulian aqueduct across the heel of Italy through sun-baked countryside, trulli farmhouses, and quiet inland towns.
-
Alpe Adria Radweg
Descending 415 km from Salzburg through the Dolomites and Friuli into northern Italy, this route offers sustained Alpine descent into Italian culture and cuisine.
-
Via Claudia Augusta
Tracing a 700 km Roman trade road from the Danube through Bavaria and the Alps into the Po Valley, this route combines archaeological history with serious Alpine climbing.
Best time to ride
May–June and September–October deliver the best combination of cool temperatures, settled weather, and lower crowds. The Dolomites passes are fully open from June to October. Avoid August on popular coastal and Tuscan routes — it is Italy's holiday month and accommodation prices peak. Southern Italy and Sicily are rideable in spring and autumn but can be prohibitively hot from July onwards.
