Bikepacking in Japan

Japan offers a bikepacking experience unlike anywhere else on earth. The Shimanami Kaido — a 70 km island-hopping route across the Seto Inland Sea — is one of the world's great cycling roads, with dedicated lanes, gentle gradients, and unobstructed sea views from each suspension bridge. Beyond that iconic route, Japan's rural backroads reveal a country of extraordinary contrasts: ancient cedar forests, rice paddies, mountain passes, and coastal fishing villages all within a day's ride of each other. Vending machines stocked with drinks, hot food, and even energy gels appear every few kilometres even in remote areas, solving resupply entirely. Spring (late March to early May) and autumn (October to November) are the peak seasons — cherry blossom and foliage are genuinely worth planning around. Summers are hot and humid; typhoon season peaks in August and September.

Best time to ride
Spring (late March to early May) for cherry blossom and comfortable temperatures, and autumn (October to November) for foliage — both are the peak seasons for Japanese touring. Avoid July and August if possible: typhoon risk is highest, temperatures and humidity are extreme, and mountain roads can flood. The Shimanami Kaido is rideable year-round; Hokkaido is best in July–August when the north is warmest.
