Bikepacking in Norway

Norway is purpose-built for bikepackers who want spectacular scenery and solitude in equal measure. Routes heading toward Nordkapp take you through fjord country where climbs gain hundreds of metres in just a few kilometres, rewarded with views that justify every pedal stroke. The allemannsrett — Norway's freedom to roam law — means you can pitch a tent almost anywhere in the natural landscape, and wild camping beside a fjord or on a mountain plateau is entirely legal and culturally normal. Summer days stretch to near-permanent daylight above the Arctic Circle, giving you effectively unlimited riding hours in June and July. Roads are generally good quality and traffic is light outside the main tourist corridors. Budget carefully: Norway is expensive, but the combination of free camping and breathtaking scenery makes the overall cost feel entirely worth it.

Popular routes in Norway

-
Rallarvegen
A 82 km gravel and mountain road following the historic construction route of the Bergen Railway from Haugastøl down to Flåm, with dramatic views and fast descents toward the Nærøyfjord.

Lofoten Islands Loop
A circuit of the Lofoten archipelago covers roughly 270 km on quiet roads between fishing villages, beneath jagged peaks and beside beaches that look improbably tropical for the Arctic.
-
EuroVelo 1 – Norway Section
The Norwegian stretch of the Atlantic coast route traces the western fjord coastline from the south, with ferry crossings, cliff roads, and some of Europe's most dramatic ocean scenery.
Best time to ride
Late June through August gives you the midnight sun above the Arctic Circle and the best chance of settled weather on the mountain plateau routes. May and September are viable but require warmer sleeping gear and waterproofs. Avoid October to April for high-altitude routes — most mountain passes are snowbound and services are closed. Ferries and accommodation book up quickly in July.
