Spain's diversity of terrain and climate makes it one of Europe's most compelling bikepacking destinations. The Pyrenees form a natural northern boundary of serious mountain riding, with passes that rival anything in the Alps for dramatic descent. The Camino de Santiago networks offer ready-made long-distance routes with good infrastructure and a built-in community of travellers — by bike, many sections become achievable day stages with genuine camaraderie at the end. Andalusia in the south brings heat, white villages, and the austere beauty of the Sierra Nevada, but plan your start times carefully in summer: riding from dawn to 10am and again after 6pm is the only way to manage the midday temperature. EuroVelo 1 traces the Atlantic coast from the Basque Country to southern Portugal through lush, green landscapes that most visitors never associate with Spain.

Popular routes in Spain

  • EuroVelo 1 – Atlantic Coast (Spain)

The Spanish section of the Atlantic coast route runs from the Basque Country south through Galicia, combining green mountains, wild beaches, and the last stretch of the Camino to Santiago.

  • Camino de Santiago by bike

Multiple branches lead to Santiago de Compostela — the Camino Francés, Via de la Plata, and Camino del Norte are all rideable with a loaded bike, with pilgrim infrastructure throughout.

  • Vías Verdes

More than 3,000 km of converted railway lines across Spain, with gentle gradients and good surfaces — ideal for linking regions or building multi-day itineraries through rural countryside.

  • Transpirenaica BTT

A challenging 820 km technical mountain bike crossing of the Pyrenees from the Atlantic at Irún to the Mediterranean at Cap de Creus, on off-road tracks through high mountain terrain.

Best time to ride

The Pyrenees are best ridden in June–September when the high passes are clear of snow. The Meseta and Andalusia are most manageable in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when temperatures sit between 15 and 25°C. Avoid the interior in July and August when 40°C days are common — if you must ride in summer, start before dawn and rest between 10am and 6pm. The Camino routes are best in April–June and September.
