Scotland delivers some of the most dramatic and untamed bikepacking in Europe. The Highlands are laced with rough gravel tracks, steep glen climbs, and single-track roads that see almost no traffic. The North Coast 500 route, while popular by car, becomes a genuine adventure on a loaded bike — expect fierce headwinds, sudden weather changes, and mile after mile of raw coastal scenery. Scotland's Land Reform Act gives you the legal right to wild camp almost anywhere, making multi-day off-grid touring straightforward. Pack waterproofs at all times and treat midges from June to August as an unavoidable companion. The remoteness is real: plan resupply carefully, but the reward — the kind of silence and space that feels increasingly rare — more than justifies the effort.

Best time to ride
June and July offer the best combination of daylight, weather, and manageable midge levels in the Scottish Highlands — earlier in summer the midges are at their most intense. May is often clear and uncrowded. Avoid November to February in the mountains: short days, unpredictable storms, and closed accommodation make planning difficult. Pack full waterproofs regardless of season.
